Two big weaknesses in my writing are introductions and theses. I never know how to introduce my topic in an engaging manner, so in the past my teacher has always marked me down for having a weak introduction. I need to learn to apply a 'hook' to my essays, meaning an interesting first sentence that will reel in my reader and keep them interested. My introductions are usually short and to the point, which can be pretty boring. Instead, I want to start being more elaborate not only in my introductions, but throughout all my writing. A strong thesis is the key to a good essay, but I feel that my theses are not always very strong. There were many reasons for this some being that I didn't read the text to my full potential or I didn't understand the text and/or prompt. In order to improve this, I will need to engage myself in the texts we read this fall and I will need to pay a lot of attention in class. I know that I must take college much more seriously than high school, so I don't think improving these two weaknesses will be as challenging as it would have been one or two years ago.
I anticipate that this course will help me as a writer because it is my first experience in a class outside of my old school district and town. Some, if not many ideas, concepts, and ways of teaching will be different. I will have more opportunities to improve since this will most likely be a more challenging course than the ones that I have taken before. Also, since there is relatively small classroom size, I expect this factor to be very helpful with my skills in writing, as I will have more attention than in a course with three hundred students. I hope to overcome the challenges that have been presented to me in the past and to improve as a writer by the end of this semester.

This is a painting called "Clock Explosion" by Salvador Dali. I find it very interesting because at first glance it just looks like a strange painting of a clock that appears to be melting or bended, and it is also falling off of a desk-like surface into a landscape. It seems like a very strange concept until you look at it figuratively. What could this clock represent? Does it represent the passing of time? Does the landscape represent our world? Could this painting mean that time is running out? There are so many questions I have about this painting, but I like it because one can look at it in a number of different ways and see so many different things. The first time I saw this painting was at an art exhibit in Philadelphia a few years ago. My eyes were glued to this painting for what seemed like hours, and i felt awestruck, confused, weary, and enlightened. This painting merits the term "art" because it made me feel strong emotions and it made me think. It is also extremely abstract and could be looked at in many different ways.
